Matariki ki Mauao is a programme of events at the base of Mauao that involves guided tours with star navigator Jack Thatcher CNZM and workshops for schools. Our theme for this year is Tupuānuku, one of the stars in the Matariki cluster that is connected to kai (food) and rongoā (traditional medicines) that is grown within the soil or harvested from the ground.
Kickstart your Matariki holiday on the Friday, 14 July, with an early morning hikoi to the top of Mauao and hear about the importance of Matariki shared by Jack Thatcher. Join in the ceremonies of karakia and maumaharatanga – a time to remember and acknowledge loved ones who have recently passed away.
