About The Event
Nau mai tātou ka whakatairanga i tēnei huihuinga o tātou. Come and help us celebrate the meaning of Matariki in our city centre. We will share waiata and stories as we trace the significance of Hautapu from its ancient source to our activities today. Hautapu is a traditional ceremony associated with Matariki. This ceremony is commonly known as ‘whāngai i te hautapu’, meaning to feed the stars with a sacred offering. There will be waiata at Waihīrere (Red Square) from 12:00-12:30pm (weather dependent). This will be held in front of the sculpture Te Rauhea. Following waiata, a lecture will be held at the University of Waikato’s Tauranga Campus about Hautapu and the observation through ceremony as practised today. This takes place from 12:30-1:30pm.
