Set on the east coast of Aotearoa, 12-year-old Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) challenges tradition and embraces the past, in order to find mana to lead her people forward. Tracing her whakapapa to the legendary whale rider, Paikea, this stunning Aotearoa classic film highlights themes of reconnecting with whakapapa, honouring kaitiakitanga, and celebrating the strength of whanaungatanga and tūrangawaewae. The film embodies acknowledging the past while moving forward, central to the Matariki season of reflection and new beginnings.
