Taurapa
This 3D ice sculpture of a taurapa embodies the guiding presence of Waipuna-ā-Rangi, the celestial force that nourishes both body and spirit with its healing waters. In the Māori tradition, Waipuna-ā-Rangi is one of the stars of Matariki, known for bringing the life-giving rains that sustain the land and its people. Here, I have represented Waipuna-ā-Rangi as the carved wheku (face) at the top of the taurapa, overseeing and protecting those navigating the journey of life below.
The taurapa itself serves as more than just an adornment to the waka, it is a spiritual and directional force, ensuring that the vessel moves with purpose and intent. In this work, Waipuna-ā-Rangi takes on the role of the helmsman, steering us towards our dreams and aspirations, much like the guiding rain that nourishes the land and allows it to flourish.
As we voyage through our own journeys, we move through shifting tides sometimes calm, sometimes turbulent. Yet, Waipuna-ā-Rangi remains constant above, offering both physical and spiritual healing, reminding us to remain connected to our environment and to the aspirations that drive us forward.
This sculpture is not just an exploration of form but an expression of the unseen forces that support us. It is a tribute to the celestial guardians who guide us, the wisdom of our ancestors, and the enduring connection between the heavens, the ocean, and our own paths in life.
