Ngā Roimata o Ranginui
This sculpture depicts Ranginui, guided by his mokopuna, Waipunaārangi, as she reveals to him his long-separated love. When the sky begins to open, Ranginui gazes down upon Papatūānuku.
Overcome with emotion, he begins to weep — his tears falling as rain upon the whenua.
Waipunarangi lifts her voice in karakia:
Nāna nei, tō aroha e
Ko Papatūānuku, e takoto nei
Te whaea o te ao, te puna ora
Tukua tō aroha, ki te whenua tapu nei
Behold, your love is here.
Papatūānuku lies before us.
Mother of the world, spring of life,
Let your love flow to this sacred land.
